Intervene If Something Isn’t Right

Bystander Intervention is the core of what we do at OutSmartNYC. From simply checking-in to removing a toxic party from the situation, bystander intervention is community care and something all of us can do to ensure everyone has the best possible night out. Here are a few tips, made in collaboration with nightlife professionals, that we go over in our trainings:

Check In

You don’t have to make an accusation. Check on your friends throughout the night! “You good?”, “What’s going on?”

Speak Up

Try to get the bartender or security involved, either directly or indirectly.

Separate

“Excuse me, just gotta get through here”, “I think the bartender is trying to get your attention”.

Remove

“Come to the bathroom with meeeee”, “Wanna go for a smoke?”

Support

“What do you need?”, “How can I help?”
